LEGACY FUNDING FINANCE COMMITTEE

MINUTES

Representative Dean Urdahl, Chair of the Legacy Funding Finance Committee, began the seventh meeting at 12:34 P.M. on Monday, March 2, 2015 in the Basement Hearing Room of the State Office Building.

The meeting was called to order at 12:36 P.M. A Quorum was present.

The Committee Legislative Assistant noted the roll.

Representative Erin Murphy moved to approve the minutes of February 24, 2015. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

HF967 Baker, Somali art and cultural heritage program funding provided, and money appropriated. Chair Urdahl laid the bill over for possible inclusion in the Legacy omnibus bill.

Representative Torkelson moved the H0967A2 amendment. THE MOTION PREVAILED.

Mohamed Farah, Executive Director of Ka Joog, testified regarding the origins of the organization, and its mission to empower Minnesota’s Somali youth. Mr. Farah also presented Ka Joog’s plans for requested Legacy funds, which include expanding programs into greater Minnesota.

Hasan Warsame testified regarding his involvement with Ka Joog as a student, and the effect the organization has had on his community.

Greg Lais and Chad Dayton presented Wilderness Inquiry’s Legacy fund request. They also testified about Wilderness Inquiry’s work in enabling disabled persons and disadvantaged students to experience the outdoors, and plans for requested Legacy funds.

Mark Johnson and Heather Kopp of the Lessard Sams Outdoor Heritage Council provided an overview of the council’s history, presented the council’s Legacy fund request, and related how past allocations have been used.

Todd Renville and Barb Peichel of the Clean Water Council presented an overview of the council’s history and presented the council’s recommendations for Clean Water fund appropriations. They also compared the council’s recommendations to those proposed by Governor Dayton. Mr. Renville and Ms. Peichel related how requested Legacy appropriations would be used.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:28 P.M.
