A House resolution recognizing Tom Smalec for his service to
the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Whereas, Tom Smalec
began his employment with the House of Representatives in 1990 as a constituent
service writer; and
Whereas, Tom soon found his home in DFL media where he
was a prolific and talented writer; and
Whereas, Tom
had a gift for understanding the concerns of working Minnesotans and putting
those thoughts into clear, concise writings; and
Whereas, Tom was the voice of many of the most powerful
leaders in Minnesota, including two speakers, three majority leaders, and two
minority leaders; and
Whereas, Tom
truly believed in the democratic process and spent his life giving voice to our
best and truest ideals; and
Whereas, he
had an easy laugh, a quick wit, and an uncanny knowledge of minutia, including
the difference between a stalactite and a stalagmite; and
Whereas, Tom enjoyed the outdoors and nature, and shared
his love of geology through his work with the Geology Society of Minnesota; and
Whereas, Tom was a devoted and loving husband to his
wife Cathy and a great father to his two daughters, Heather and Andrea; and
Whereas, Tom Smalec was a wonderful coworker and friend
and a valuable citizen of the State of Minnesota; Now, Therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the
State of Minnesota that it recognizes, honors, and appreciates Tom Smalec for
his contributions and extends sincere condolences to his family.
Be It Further Resolved that the Chief Clerk of the House
of Representatives is directed to prepare an enrolled copy of this resolution,
to be authenticated by his signature and that of the Speaker, and transmit it
to the family of Tom Smalec.

A House resolution commemorating the life and work of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Whereas, the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is
January 15, 1929; and
Whereas, Dr. King accepted the mantle of leadership of
the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955 to desegregate public transportation by
leading a boycott which lasted over 381 days; and
Whereas, the
Montgomery bus boycott inspired civil rights activity all over the United States,
including the state of Minnesota, and this movement for civil and human rights
has made our society freer, more democratic, and more inclusive; and
Whereas, Dr. King's life was devoted to the elimination
of segregation and prejudice against all people; and
Whereas, achievements in human and civil rights were
accomplished through his personal efforts and his example to others; and
Whereas, he sought to fulfill his goals exclusively by
nonviolent means; and
Whereas, Dr. King's life was ended
by assassination on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was leading
an effort for more just treatment of sanitation workers; and
Whereas, the actions and efforts of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. have served as an inspiration to many; Now, Therefore,
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the
State of Minnesota that it honors the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. and the Civil Rights movement.
