1.4    "Sec. 19. Minnesota Statutes 2006, section 124D.78, subdivision 1, is amended to read:
1.5    Subdivision 1. Parent committee. School boards and American Indian schools
1.6must provide for the maximum involvement of parents of children enrolled in education
1.7programs, programs for elementary and secondary grades, special education programs,
1.8and support services. Accordingly, the each board of a school district in which there
1.9are ten percent or more of enrolled children are American Indian children enrolled and
1.10each American Indian school must establish a parent committee. If a committee whose
1.11membership consists of a majority of parents of American Indian children has been or
1.12is established according to federal, tribal, or other state law, that committee may serve
1.13as the committee required by this section and is subject to, at least, the requirements of
1.14this subdivision and subdivision 2.
1.15    The parent committee must develop its recommendations in consultation with
1.16the curriculum advisory committee required by section 120B.11, subdivision 3. This
1.17committee must afford parents the necessary information and the opportunity effectively
1.18to express their views concerning all aspects of American Indian education and the
1.19educational needs of the American Indian children enrolled in the school or program. The
1.20committee must also address the need for adult education programs for American Indian
1.21people in the community. The board or American Indian school must ensure that programs
1.22are planned, operated, and evaluated with the involvement of and in consultation with
1.23parents of children served by the programs.
1.24EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective for the 2008-2009 school year and
1.25later."
