1.3Page 1, after line 5, insert:

1.4    "Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2006, section 609.115, is amended by adding a
1.5subdivision to read:
1.6    Subd. 10. Veterans mental health status. If a defendant convicted of a crime is
1.7currently serving in the military or is a veteran and has been diagnosed by a qualified
1.8psychiatrist or clinical psychologist or physician with a mental illness, the court may:
1.9    (1) order that the officer preparing the report under subdivision 1 consult with the
1.10United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs,
1.11or another agency or person with suitable knowledge or experience, for the purpose
1.12of providing the court with information regarding treatment options available to the
1.13defendant including federal, state, and local programming; and
1.14    (2) consider the treatment recommendations of any diagnosing or treating mental
1.15health professionals together with the treatment options available to the defendant in
1.16imposing sentence."
1.17Renumber the sections in sequence and correct the internal references
1.18Amend the title accordingly
