EducationNew board(April 11, 2001) The House Governmental Operations and Veterans Affairs Policy Committee approved a
bill without recommendation April 10 that would establish a state board for charter schools.
The bill now goes to the House K-12 Education Finance Committee.
HF1265,
sponsored by Rep. Mindy Greiling (DFL-Roseville), would establish a board to perform the state role in
sponsoring charter school. The board would also administer state and federal start-up aid.
The seven-member board would be appointed by the governor with the Senate's advice and consent.
Board members would serve staggered six year terms.
Jessie Montano, an assistant commissioner of the Department of Children, Families and Learning, said
the administration opposes the bill because it would create a new level of bureaucracy.
