SAINT PAUL, MN – Today, Representatives Kristin Robbins (R-Maple Grove) and Jeff Backer (R-Browns Valley issued a joint statement following the resignation of the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) Commissioner, Jodi Harpstead, citing ongoing challenges and calls for stronger accountability within the department.
"The resignation of the DHS Commissioner underscores the significant challenges facing the Department of Human Services and is a direct result of Republicans pushing for more oversight. For years, DHS has been plagued by operational failures, mismanagement, lack of transparency, and fraud,” said Robbins. Rep. Backer continued, “Minnesotans deserve a government that is both accountable and effective in delivering critical services. This change in leadership offers an opportunity to address longstanding issues and rebuild trust with the public."
Both Representatives highlighted the need for bipartisan efforts to ensure DHS operates efficiently and responsibly for the benefit of Minnesota families. "Moving forward, I urge Governor Walz to appoint a leader with the experience and commitment necessary to enact meaningful reform," said Robbins. Backer added, “Our most vulnerable citizens depend on DHS, and we must do everything we can to ensure it serves them with integrity and care.”
The resignation comes amid increasing scrutiny of the agency's performance and calls from lawmakers for greater oversight. Rep. Robbins has advocated for accountability in state agencies and will continue to push for reforms in her role as Chair of the newly created Committee on Fraud and Oversight to enhance transparency and protect taxpayer dollars from fraud and abuse. Backer, on the other hand, who is the Chair of the Health Finance and Policy Committee, will be working to ensure proper oversights are built into future legislation regarding the Department of Human Services.
