Dear Neighbors,
This week, DFLer David Gottfried was sworn in as the House’s 134th member after winning a special election for an open seat in Roseville and Shoreview. That means the House is back to the 67-67 tie voters delivered in November, and the previously negotiated co-governing agreement is now in effect. House committees will rotate gavels, with DFL and Republican co-chairs setting their respective agendas and bill hearings.
I’m excited to be co-chairing the Public Safety committee and have already been working across the aisle to advance bipartisan bills.
Over the last couple of weeks, I have presented numerous bipartisan bills. I have presented bills on the following topics, including: streamlined investigations for military sexual assaults, grant funding for victim services, privacy protections for domestic violence victims, school safety, and a bonding request for Arden Hills.
My bill to create several important protections for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities was heard in the Human Services Committee. The gravity of the issues facing Minnesotans in long-term care facilities was first impressed on me when a constituent came to me seeking help for the mistreatment experienced by her mother and aunt. As I dug into this more, I learned that they were not alone in the difficulty they experienced. This legislation is designed to help residents and their families so they can focus on the care they need, not financial stress. Every Minnesotan deserves to live with dignity and respect, no matter their level of wealth. This legislation takes one large step forward to guarantee that for our most vulnerable loved ones. Watch my presentation and constituent testimony here.
Constituent meetings continue to happen with frequency as many community members come to the Capitol for their “day on the hill.” I love hearing about the issues that are important to you when you visit for these events. There have been too many meetings to list here, but they have included those advocating for people with disabilities, Edgewood Middle School students, local leaders, and more. Below is a photograph with two in-district McDonald’s franchise owners who were at the Capitol for Shamrock Shake day.
Leaders from Minnesota’s 11 Tribal Nations came to the Capitol for Sovereignty Day. This important event brought legislators, Tribal leaders, experts, tribal-state agency liaisons, and others together for a day of learning, conversation, understanding, and most importantly, strengthening government-to-government relations between the legislature and the Tribal Nations within Minnesota.
This week, I was honored to attend the 10th Anniversary Iftar Dinner, a milestone event held during Ramadan celebrating Minnesota’s diverse communities and fostering dialogue between legislators, faith leaders, military officials, and civic organizations.
A special thank you to State Representative Samakab Hussein for hosting the dinner!
Donald Trump has signed an Executive Order that dismantles the Education Department. The Minnesota Department of Education has “launched a public feedback portal at education.mn.gov for parents, students, teachers, and community members to submit detailed accounts of the ways recent Executive Orders and abrupt federal education cuts are impacting schools and children across our state.” The survey link is here.
I filed a House resolution condemning Donald Trump’s pardons of the January 6th insurrectionists. His pardons send a dangerous message that political violence carries no consequences if it aligns with his worldview. We cannot remain silent while the President and his allies excuse and embolden those who sought to overturn a free and fair election through violence. This resolution is an opportunity for lawmakers to reaffirm our commitment to democracy, stand with law enforcement, stand against radical extremists, and unequivocally condemn both the deadly attack on our Capitol and the reckless abuse of power that granted impunity to those who carried it out.
Beginning May 7, 2025, Minnesotans 18 years of age or older will not be able to use their standard driver's license or identification card to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. Instead, they will need one of three options:
If you are not sure which license type is right for you, check out the Driver Vehicle Services’ website here.
