SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Last night, Representative Samakab Hussein (DFL-Saint Paul), a proud Muslim and the first Somali American elected to represent District 65A, hosted the 10th Anniversary Iftar Dinner, a milestone event honoring Minnesota’s diverse communities and fostering dialogue between legislators, faith leaders, military officials, and civic organizations. He had the great honor of providing a platform to demonstrate how Minnesota’s Somali American community is a leading force in shaping impactful policy, both in Minnesota and globally.
Held in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs and the Minnesota Institute of Horn of Africa Studies, this gathering was more than just a shared meal—it was a testament to the power of community, understanding, and collaboration during the sacred month of Ramadan.
“Ramadan is a time for self-reflection, compassion, and gratitude,” said Rep. Hussein during his remarks. “It reminds us of the importance of giving, serving others, and strengthening our bonds as a community. Tonight, we come together to reaffirm our shared commitment to building bridges across cultures, faiths, and backgrounds.”
Minnesota has a diverse population, and this event underscored the state’s commitment to inclusion, respect, and collaboration. The dinner brought together Governor Tim Walz, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, Speaker of the House Representative Lisa Demuth, Mayor Melvin Carter, military personnel, diplomats, faith leaders, and community advocates, reflecting a shared vision for a more unified and harmonious Minnesota.
“This evening is about more than just breaking bread together—it is about breaking barriers,” Rep. Hussein continued. “It is about recognizing that, despite our differences, we share common values of faith, family, and service. It is about reaffirming our commitment to working together, lifting one another up, and ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.”
Rep. Hussein extended his deepest gratitude to the Senators, members of the House of Representatives, and local leaders who joined the event. Their support underscores the Minnesota Legislature’s dedication to promoting cultural understanding, fostering unity, and supporting diverse communities.
“Your presence here reaffirms that our government stands with us in fostering harmony and inclusion,” Rep. Hussein emphasized. “We are stronger when we come together, engage in meaningful dialogue, and work toward a common goal of equity, justice, and shared prosperity.”
As the 10th anniversary of this cherished event, the evening served as a milestone moment to reflect on progress made and the work still ahead. Rep. Hussein emphasized that the relationships formed, and conversations held at events like this are critical to creating lasting change.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to partner with these organizations in hosting this event,” Rep. Hussein concluded. “It is my sincere hope that tonight’s gathering will inspire continued dialogue, deeper connections, and meaningful collaborations that extend far beyond this room.”
As the event concluded, guests left with a renewed sense of community, purpose, and commitment to ensuring that Minnesota remains a state where all cultures, faiths, and traditions are celebrated and embraced.
