Legislative Update – April 11, 2025

Neighbors,

This week marked the end of our “committee deadlines,” meaning the deadline by which most major budget bills must be passed out of their committees on their way to votes on the House Floor. This means it’s crunch time for legislators, as we work as hard as possible to advocate for our proposals to be included in the budget negotiations going forward.

Mahamoud Committee

Next week, House offices will be closed to the public for our Passover/Easter recess. Once legislators return from break, we will begin hearing budget bills on the House Floor for full votes, and then we will enter negotiations with the Senate and the Governor on our final budget bills. It’s been a fast-paced session and I’ve already learned so much about how I can be a better advocate for District 62B!

First Bill Passed on the House Floor

Last week marked another important “first” as I passed my first standalone bill off the House Floor! I’m proud to report that the bill passed with unanimous support, 131-0! The legislation is also moving forward in the Minnesota Senate, and if it passes there, it will head to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

The bill wasn’t necessarily flashy; it was mostly making technical corrections to our current laws, but it builds upon our work in consumer protections and supporting homeownership in Minnesota. You can watch my comments on the House floor here.

Town Hall with Rep. Ilhan Omar

The actions we see being taken in Washington, D.C. on a near-daily basis are alarming, disturbing, and downright dangerous.

Whether it’s undermining public education, imposing tariffs that drive up the cost of living and doing business, firing thousands of federal workers with no warning, or cutting Medicaid to give tax breaks to billionaires, the Trump administration’s policies are making life worse for everyone. Every day, more and more people are standing up to Donald Trump and his billionaire friends, and fighting back to protect our families, schools, communities, and fundamental rights.

That’s why I’m pleased to announce a special town hall meeting in Minneapolis on Monday, April 21 at 7 pm to fight back against the Trump administration’s harmful policies together. To receive the event location, please register here.

Minneapolis Town Hall

I’ll be joined by U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, our State Senator Omar Fateh and 62A Rep. Aisha Gomez, and many more Minneapolis legislators. This event will feature a presentation about how the federal government’s actions are hurting the people of Minnesota, and most importantly, it’s an opportunity for people in our area to voice their fears, frustrations, and ideas.

I’m eager to listen to what you have to say and work together to stand up for our shared values. Please reach out to me with any questions about the event. I hope to see you and our community turn out for this important town hall meeting on April 21st!

Protect Medicaid, Not Millionaires

While President Trump and Congressional Republicans look to subsidize tax cuts for the wealthy by reducing federal funding for Medicaid, DFL legislators introduced legislation that would raise taxes on millionaires at the level necessary to offset any cuts to this crucial program.

Medicaid is the largest single source of health insurance in Minnesota, serving senior citizens, children, families, and people with disabilities. There are so many of our neighbors here in District 62B who rely on Medicaid to stay healthy, and we must act to protect it.

protect

A report from Congress’s Joint Economic Committee found that if Republicans in Congress pass their proposed budget and cut Medicaid, Minnesota could see 89,000 rural residents lose their health coverage,130,000 children lose their health insurance, more than 1 in 6 seniors lose their nursing home care and, in total, nearly 400,000 people cut off from their health insurance.

If these callous cuts go through without additional revenue raised by Minnesota, it will have a direct and immediate negative effect on health in Minnesota, costing lives and doing harm. DFLers in the House are fighting to ensure we protect Minnesotans from these disastrous cuts, and I’m proud to support this effort.
