ST. PAUL – With a state budget needing to be approved before July 1, the Minnesota Legislature returned to St. Paul on June 14 after being called into a special session.
“This is the first time in many years we haven’t had a budget passed,” Davids said. “Its very disappointing that legislative leadership couldn’t have finished the job in May.”
Davids noted not one budget bill within any area of state government was approved before lawmakers were required to adjourn. Now, all of them must be passed before July 1 in order to avoid a state government shutdown.
Davids, who is the House Republican lead on the Minnesota House Taxes Committee, said some work remains in that budget area.
“There is good news as we are getting close to a compromise solution on taxes,” Davids said. “Our rural business owners, their employees, and farmers have struggled mightily during this pandemic and there is no reason for lawmakers to ignore their problems and financially punish them. Hopefully we will approve this bill very soon.”
