Rep. Michael V. Nelson votes in support of two bills addressing food insecurity

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - On Thursday, the Minnesota House of Representatives voted to pass two bills aimed to address food insecurity in the state. HF 5, authored by Rep. Sydney Jordan (DFL – Minneapolis), would create a state program for schools to provide up to two free meals per day to all students. HF 213, authored by Rep. Heather Keeler (DFL – Moorhead), would provide an investment of $5 million for food shelf programs in light of record numbers of visits to food shelves last year. Rep. Michael V. Nelson (DFL – Brooklyn Center) is a co-author of HF 213 and voted to support both bills.

“It's simple: hungry kids can’t learn at their full capacity,” said Rep. Nelson. “We have a real opportunity to make a large quality of life improvement for many struggling Minnesotan families. I was proud to support both of these great bills tonight.”

In the Senate, both bills are making their way through the committee process.
