Saint Paul, Minnesota –Governor Dayton released details of his supplemental budget today. Speaker Paul Thissen released the following statement.
"Governor Dayton deserves tremendous credit for laying out an initial budget that started a long-overdue conversation about how best to solve our state's structural budget issues while also investing in our future. And he deserves equal credit for listening to the concerns of the business community and legislators in putting together a revised budget that is responsible, fair and puts middle class Minnesotans first.
For too long we have seen our budget deficits resolved by deep cuts to the middle class and one-time fixes. That approach has only given us more deficits, higher property taxes, and larger classroom sizes. It is high time we reject the status quo and build a budget that positions our state to thrive in the future. In particular, that will require we make overdue investments in education so that Minnesota can stay ahead of the curve with a world-class workforce.
Next week we will release our budget targets as we continue to work together toward our shared goal of a balanced budget that invests in education, a strong middle class and a thriving future for Minnesota.”
