SAINT PAUL, Minn. – State Rep. Tina Liebling (DFL – Rochester) will serve on the Legislative Commission on Planning and Fiscal Policy (LCPFP), a joint House/Senate panel charged with long-range oversight of the state budget. House Speaker Melissa Hortman made the appointment last week.
“Minnesota has a complex, wide-ranging state budget that provides many essential services like education for our kids, health care for the most vulnerable Minnesotans, and a transportation system that keeps our economy running,” Rep. Liebling said. “The LCPFP is an important tool to help make sure Minnesota has a responsible, sustainable budget that delivers for Minnesotans. I’m honored to have been appointed to this important position.”
The joint House/Senate commission was created to provide the Legislature with an in-depth analysis of actual and projected state government revenues, expenditures, and tax expenditures. Operating independently of legislative committees, it provides an important oversight role for both the Legislature and executive branch while considering the state’s long-term needs.
The commission consists of nine members of the Minnesota House and nine from the Senate, with the position of chair alternating between the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader.
The LCPFP meets periodically throughout the year and makes various recommendations for improvements to the state budget process and receives updates from budget experts on timely issues such as changes in the state’s credit status, demographic shifts, impacts of government shutdowns and others.
