Despite Big Challenges, We Can Work Together to Move Our State Forward

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Dear neighbors,

With the fourth week of the 2013-2014 legislative session upon us, I want to give you a brief recap of what’s happened so far and what we can expect over the coming weeks.

A flurry of legislation has begun making its way through respective committees. I was proud to co-sponsor one of the first bills introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

HF5 creates a cutting-edge online marketplace where individuals, families, and small businesses will be able to obtain quality, affordable health insurance that fits their budget. Minnesota has always been a national leader when it comes to providing quality health care. This bipartisan piece of legislation will ensure our state stays that way.

In addition to this measure, I have co-authored other legislation and written several bills, including one that provides funding to complete a regional public safety training facility in Maplewood to serve the east metro. Senator Charles Wiger will carry a companion bill in the Senate. We secured $3 million in the most recent bonding bill but need an additional $1 million to finish the project. I am hopeful that we can get the job done and strengthen public safety in our district and the region.

As these pieces of legislation make their way through committees, the issue that is sure to receive the most attention this session is our state’s budget.

Last week Governor Dayton released his highly anticipated budget proposal, which I believe is a good starting point in what will be a robust conversation about how to cut our projected $1.1 billion deficit and make smart investments that grow our economy.

Over the coming days and weeks, I plan to examine Governor Dayton’s budget proposal. I’m looking forward to learning more about how his plan would impact our district and our state. Minnesota is ready for an honest discussion on budget and tax issues.

Most importantly, I want to hear your thoughts and feedback. I encourage you to contact me by phone at (651) 296-1188, by email at rep.leon.lillie@house.mn, or by mail or in person at 371 State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155.

Minnesota faces big challenges, but I am confident that we can work together to move our state forward by creating jobs and balancing the budget in a way that is fair and responsible.

Sincerely,

Leon Lillie
State Representative, District 43B
