Minnesota will become the fourteenth state to implement low-emission vehicle (LEV) and zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) standards. That means that automobile manufacturers will make and sell vehicles that produce lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants and vehicles with ultra-low or zero tailpipe admissions. As a result, consumers will have more choices. Many Minnesotans are interested in fuel-efficient and electric vehicles, and now they’ll have better access to these options.
Since these vehicles are cheaper to operate and maintain, clean car standards will result in savings at the pump. Estimates indicate that they’ll save Minnesotans $320 million a year by 2030 and $750 million a year by 2040.
The standards will also protect the quality of our air. Reducing transportation emissions is a key component of preventing air pollution.
You can learn more about LEV and ZEV standards and how they will benefit Minnesota here. The newly-formed Climate Action Caucus that I’m a part of released a statement in response to this exciting news. You can read it here.
Sincerely,
