Legislative Update - December 5, 2019

Thursday, December 5, 2019

Rep. Hanson

Dear neighbors,

I hope you had an great Thanksgiving with your loved ones! Here’s a quick update from the Capitol:

Hansen 12.5 (1)

I had a great meeting with the Dakota Regional Chamber of Commerce this morning! I appreciated the opportunity to discuss legislative issues with the Chamber, Senator Matt Klein, and West St. Paul Mayor Dave Napier.

Lawns to Legumes Update

The Lawns to Legumes program, which was established thanks to legislation we passed this year, helps Minnesotans create pollinator-friendly habitats in their lawns. It provides many resources, including workshops, coaching, and planting guides. If you’re interested, you can learn more about these opportunities here.

Lawns to Legumes also offers cost-share funding. If you’re interested in applying for it, more information is available here. Applications must be received by Friday, February 28.

No Child Left Inside Update

The No Child Left Inside program was also created earlier this year. It provides grants for outdoor environmental, ecological, and natural resource-based activities for young Minnesotans, particularly those with limited access to these kinds of opportunities. When the first round of applications opened in October, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) received hundreds of applications in just a few hours.

The second phase of applications is now open. If you work with a public entity, tribal government, or non-profit organization, please consider applying here. Applications will be accepted until 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 9.

November Economic Forecast

Minnesota Management and Budget released the November economic forecast this morning. While the forecast shows a balance of $1.3 billion, it doesn’t account for inflation. Inflation may lead to deficits in future years, undermining our ability to provide the services and resources that Minnesotans deserve. In order to build a better Minnesota, we need to make smart investments in education, health care, infrastructure, and working families. More information about the forecast is available here.

CPL Applications Now Open

The Conservation Partners Legacy (CPL) grant program is now accepting applications for Expedited Conservation Project grants. These funds are used to restore forests, wetlands, prairies, and habitat for fish, game, and wildlife. If you work with an eligible organization, please click here to learn more about the program. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21.

Chronic Wasting Disease Webinar

If you’d like to learn more about chronic wasting disease (CWD), the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota is hosting a free online webinar with Dr. Debbie McKenzie, a leading expert on the topic. On Wednesday, December 11 at 1 p.m., Dr. McKenzie will share information about CWD and potential consequences for Minnesota. Register for the webinar here.
