Legislative Update - May 25, 2021

Tuesday, May 25, 2021

Dear neighbors,

Today is the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. It’s a day for reflection, for remembering George Floyd, and for dedicating ourselves to making Minnesota a safer and more equitable place. There’s a lot more work to be done, but we’re ready to act. I’ll keep working with Minnesotans to address racial inequalities and build communities where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Work Continues at the Capitol

Governor Walz signed one of my bills into law today! The bipartisan legislation allows communities to transport tree waste to a plant in St. Paul, which uses waste wood as a fuel source and sells some of the electricity it produces to Xcel Energy. This will help deal with emerald ash borer infestations and manage escalating amounts of tree waste.

Our work at the Capitol has continued, with many legislators currently engaged in negotiations with Senate Republicans. House DFLers are dedicated to delivering a budget that puts students, families, workers, and small businesses first. Please stay tuned for updates.

Report on Legacy Amendment Projects Released

Minnesota’s Legacy Amendment, which voters approved in 2008, allows us to invest in the outdoors, parks and trails, clean water, and arts and culture. It has funded impactful projects across the state for more than a decade. Each year, several projects are evaluated to ensure the Legacy funds are used effectively. The results of the 2020 evaluation, which were released recently, indicate that most of the projects that received support are on track to meet their goals.

Upcoming Events and Activities

I had a great time at the Stride for Packer Pride last weekend. I joined many community members walking to raise funds for the South St. Paul Educational Foundation, which assists students who aren’t able to participate in extracurricular athletics and other activities due to financial reasons.
