Legislative Update – January 29, 2025

Dear neighbors,

This week, President Trump attempted to freeze billions in federal funding to state programs that would harm our state’s healthcare and childcare systems and threaten to hinder our work supporting law enforcement, schools, veterans, cancer patients, and more. Luckily, our Attorney General Keith Ellison quickly pledged to fight this action, and a federal judge temporarily paused the freeze.

No matter what happens with this specific executive order, make no mistake: Trump will continue to threaten government programs Minnesotans rely on.

In an icy economy, Trump wants to slam on the brakes. All Minnesotans benefit from federal grants & loans that support our economy, and Trump’s foolish actions weaken our efforts for the good life.

I will be in contact with the offices of Representative Craig, and Senators Smith and Klobuchar on the potential impacts of Trump’s actions, and I will continue in my mission to ensure our government addresses the needs of our community.

Promoting Healthy Agriculture

This week I participated in the Land Stewardship Project's Small Grains Markets Workshop. Over 200 people showed up looking for more information on diversified crops, livestock, and healthy agriculture. This is perfect example of the work we have ahead of us to support small, family farmers over corporate agriculture conglomerates.

We heard presentations from farmers and scientists on the importance of reintroducing small grains in Minnesota. You can watch the presentation here.

Other Updates

This week, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced a settlement with Novo Nordisk, securing insulin products for $35 per month for the next five years from the manufacturer - regardless of whether the Minnesotan has issuance.

Amidst a barrage of troubling headlines, this is great news and builds on our work like the new law capping co-pays on insulin and the cost of supplies, as well as the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act and Minnesota’s Insulin Safety Net Program.

Finally, thank you to all the volunteers who made this year’s South St Paul Annual Flannel Fest Hot Dish Cook-Off a success at the Croatian Hall. It was a great event, and I’m so glad that state support has helped keep the Croatian Hall a key meeting place for our community.
