St. Paul-The Minnesota Department of Revenue released certified numbers late Friday showing property taxes are set to increase $125 million statewide. Representative Paul Torkelson (R-Hanska), the Republican lead on the House Property and Local Tax Division Committee, gave the following statement in response.
"In 2013, Democrats sent local governments $292 million in new money claiming it would lower property taxes. Despite Democrats repeated promises to reduce property taxes, Minnesotans learned today they are facing the highest property tax levy in state history. Governor Dayton and Democrats set the target and they missed. After Democrats took $2.4 billion in new taxes and fees this past session, hardworking taxpayers can't afford to pay more."
