Legislative Update (April 15, 2016)

Friday, April 15, 2016

Dear Neighbors,

We’ve made it! Spring is here to stay, and it’s time to head outside with your family and friends to enjoy the weather. I look forward to spending a few hours outside this weekend, but first wanted to pass along what we’ve done this week in St. Paul.

REAL ID

Earlier today, the House Civil Law and Transportation committees held a joint hearing to discuss the Department of Public Safety’s report on REAL ID. We learned it could cost $5 million, but a fund within DPS could pay for the upgrades. There’s lots to discuss in the coming weeks, but we’re on track to be compliant in the near future.

Freedom Bills

This week, the House passed two bills for freedom. The first ensures that daily fantasy sports websites remain legal in our state. Some states are making these sites illegal, but I believe it should be up to grown adults to make their own decision on this issue, not leave it up to the government.

I also voted for a bill to allow fireworks sales near the 4th of July. Thousands of Minnesotans currently buy fireworks in other states and use them here. We should try to keep that business in our state instead of giving jobs and tax revenue to Wisconsin.

Body Cameras

In the Civil Law and Data Practices Committee, we’ve continued discussions regarding police body camera usage. The main point of disagreement is whether a person must provide consent for a law enforcement officer to have a body camera on inside their home. This is an issue that balances public safety and personal privacy, which means there are valid arguments on both sides.

Awards Banquet

Last night, I attended the Licensed Child Care Providers of Anoka County’s annual banquet. I was fortunate to present Dawn Marx with an award to honor her 40 years as a licensed child care provider in our area. It was a great event, and I’m proud of the work our care providers, like Dawn, do for Anoka County.

Around Town

The Coon Rapids Ice Fantasy Show, “Skating Through Candyland”, opens next week at the Coon Rapids Ice Center. Performances are Thursday through Sunday, and tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. You can find more info here.

The warm weather means summer is just around the corner. Recently, Coon Rapids released their summer activities brochure, and there are many fun events ahead. Click here to see what our area has to offer.

If you have a question or comment, please contact my office; I’d love to hear from you about any state issue.

My best,

Peggy
