ST. PAUL, MN – On Wednesday, May 11, Rep. Peggy Scott, R-Andover, passed a bill – with wide bipartisan support – off the House floor. The legislation, HF1333, passed by a 112-9 vote, and reforms spousal maintenance to make alimony fairer in Minnesota. The bill would eliminate ongoing spousal maintenance should an ex-spouse cohabitate with a new partner.
“We’ve heard testimony throughout the legislative process about Minnesotans feeling like prisoners to alimony payments when the conditions of living for a former spouse have changed dramatically,” said Scott. “Divorce is always a difficult situation, and this bill tries to make the process fairer for all involved.”
