Legislative Update (May 19, 2016)

Thursday, May 19, 2016

We’re getting down to our final hours of the legislative session. I wanted to pass along a couple newsworthy items for the final week.

Road and Bridge Funding

One of the major bills being discussed relates to transportation funding. Governor Dayton and the Senate seem stuck on spending millions for expensive train transit projects, while House Republicans are prioritizing roads and bridges. The House plan invests $6 billion in the next decade without raising the tax on gasoline. Although there are only a couple days before we adjourn, I hope the House, Senate, and Governor can move toward a compromise so we can deliver a road and bridge package to benefit our entire state.

Bill Signed Into Law

Last week, I passed my spousal maintenance bill on a wide bipartisan vote of 112-9. The bill would allow for modifications or elimination of spousal maintenance should an ex-spouse cohabitate with a new partner. We’ve heard testimony throughout the legislative process about Minnesotans feeling like prisoners to alimony payments when the conditions of living for a former spouse have changed dramatically. Divorce is always a difficult situation, and this bill tries to make the process fairer for all involved. The Senate also passed the bill with wide bipartisan support, and I just found out the governor has signed the bill into law!

Free Veteran Dental Care

It might seem like a ways off, but Saturday, June 25 marks a day when our military veterans can receive free dental care at one of 400 Aspen Dental practices around the country. If you’re a veteran and looking to take advantage of this opportunity, please call 1-844-ASPEN-HMM to find a clinic and schedule an appointment.
