Legislative Update (Jan. 27, 2017)

Friday, January 27, 2017

Dear Friends,

We’re closing out our third week in St. Paul. Yesterday was a big day at the Capitol, especially for those struggling to afford health insurance.

Rarely does a single issue elicit as much of a response as skyrocketing insurance premiums did this fall and winter. Some people I spoke with are paying thousands of dollars each month for worse insurance than they had prior to the implementation of Obamacare. Minnesotans were looking for answers, and I’m happy we delivered.

Our bill, Senate File 1, passed on a wide bipartisan vote of 108-19. First and foremost, the legislation provides a 25% premium reduction for those who don’t qualify for tax credits. With premiums as high as they are, this can mean a huge savings for a middle class family.

Though relief was our top priority, House Republicans also pushed for reforms to continue critical care, increase market competition, and expand choices for Minnesotans. These are common-sense changes that will help countless residents around the state.

I’m happy we could quickly get this bill passed, and have Governor Dayton sign it into law. Both sides came together and the result is legislation to benefit Minnesotans.

As always, I’m interested in your feedback. Please feel free to contact me by email at rep.peggy.scott@house.mn or call my office at 651-296-4231. You can also send me mail to my office address: 437 State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155.

Peggy
