Legislative Update (April 7, 2017)

Friday, April 7, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

State Budget

This week, we’re finishing up the debate and discussion of our budget bills. One of our main focuses during this time is to craft a budget that funds essential areas – like schools, transportation, and public safety – while still respecting the hardworking taxpayers of our state.

For example, a provision in the state government finance bill is estimated to save $3 million by upgrading some of our IT infrastructure. It seems like an easy fix, but it will take legislative action to bring about this change. While some prefer a rotation tax and spend, it’s important to look for efficiencies and savings when possible. We don’t want the state budget outpacing family budgets, and one way to make sure that doesn’t happen is to search for ways to save taxpayer dollars.

Weekly Visits

Although we spent much of our time discussing these budget bills, I was happy to have a number of meetings with local residents. Constituents with Kwik Trip, private colleges, and the Healthy Kids Coalition all stopped by for a visit. I also met with a group of 3rd and 4th graders from Legacy Christian Academy (pictured below) who asked some great questions. A big thank you to everyone who came to St. Paul this week!

Easter/Passover

Next week, the Legislature is on its Easter/Passover break. I wish you all a blessed Holy Week.

As you know, I always love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Have a great weekend!

Peggy
