Dear Neighbors,
Education
Happy back-to-school season! Last update I wrote about how to keep your kids safe online and things to watch for when using school-provided devices. This week I want to focus on what we did this session for our students. School funding and reforms were an important part of our discussions throughout this winter and spring, and I think we ended up with a proposal to help students in our area and throughout Minnesota.
When most people think of education discussions at the Capitol, it usually revolves around funding. This year was no different. In the end, we are investing $1.3 billion of new money into schools over the next two years. Locally, the new funding means $22.8 million of additional funding for Anoka-Hennepin schools during that time. That’s a really big deal for our local students.
We also passed reforms intended to help our students. From ending the “last in, first out” default teacher layoff policy to fixing our teacher licensure system, we made common sense changes that will help find and retain the top educators. This is great news for our students!
Family Event
Even though summer may seem over, there’s still plenty of fun outdoor events in our area. On Saturday, September 16, the city of Coon Rapids is holding a free showing of “Moana” at the park! The movie starts at 6pm at 1008 Northdale Boulevard, Coon Rapids, MN 55448. Don’t miss this fun event! Please click here for more information.
Good Luck
School is starting, which means all of our local fall sports are in action. Good luck to the local teams; you guys make us so proud!
