Legislative Update (December 1, 2017)

Friday, December 1, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

Homeless Veteran Housing

As you might have read in early updates, a group of public officials, volunteers, and area businesses are working to convert two buildings at the old Minnesota State Hospital in Anoka into housing for homeless veterans. Last night, my colleague Rep. Tim Mahoney and I organized a group of legislators to pitch in with painting.

It’s amazing to see the progress that’s already been made. We’re less than two months in, and some of the rooms are already finished and almost ready for vets to move in. When completed, the men’s building and women’s building will be able to house 30 homeless veterans each.

This is such an amazing cause to give back to heroes who served our country, and could use an extra hand now. If you’re interested in finding out more about the project, please contact me.

Local College Tour

On Wednesday, I was honored to take part in a tour of Hennepin Technical College. It was great to see how higher education is meeting industry needs. Students in many of the technical trade areas have jobs before they graduate. Additionally, many of the students are working in their chosen industry while they are in school, allowing many to graduate with NO college debt!

Recent Hearings

Although we’re still a few months from session starting, there are a number of meetings happening. This week, we held a Child Support Task Force meeting here in Coon Rapids. We heard from residents on ways the state can improve some of the issues in our child support system. There’s another meeting coming up on December 20, and I’ll be sure to keep you posted on any developments. Please feel free to share with me any concerns you have in this area of family law.

We also had a hearing for the Data Practices Commission. At this meeting, we discussed issues concerning the role of the FTC and FCC at the federal level in relation to personal, online privacy.

Upcoming Event

For those of you with young children, bring them to the Coon Rapids Ice Center on Dec. 17, to skate with Santa! For more information, please click here.
