Dear neighbor,
The legislative session is finally over. I don’t think your wallet or mine could take much more!
To solve a $627 million deficit, Democrats believed the right course of action was to impose a $2.1 billion tax increase on you – the hardworking Minnesota taxpayer. Under the Democrat tax plan, Minnesota’s income tax rate would be the second highest in the nation for comparative income and the fourth highest percentage in the nation. Some of the features of the Democrat tax plan include higher income taxes, increased sales taxes on commercial warehousing and storage, higher sales tax for individuals on all internet purchases, a hike in cigarette and tobacco taxes, and higher businesses taxes. Don’t be fooled by Democrats who say this will only affect a few people. It will affect EVERY hard-working Minnesota taxpayer. I was proud to vote against it.
The most egregious example of Democrat overreach this session was the childcare unionization bill. This bill had more lives than a cat. We had heard it had died in committee, that not enough Democrats supported it, that the Senate couldn’t pass it, etc. As the last few days of session approached, Democrats believed that paying back the big unions who help finance their campaigns was a priority over finalizing a budget. Our childcare providers in Minnesota are mostly women-owned small businesses who work hard every day caring for our children. These women are capable of running their own business and understand their own bottom line. They do not need a union. I also wonder – what’s the next step? Who will the big unions target next? My husband and I have owned real estate in the past. We’ve taken some individuals who received subsidized rent. Are we next? If you have a few minutes, please watch my floor speech from Monday opposing this bill.
