Neighbors, With less than three months remaining in the 2024 legislative session, we are making the most of our time by meeting with constituents, hearing bills, and working on the infrastructure investment bill, which is our main order of business this session. This week in the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, we received an update from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. Commissioner Brad Lindsay presented information on the new veterans’ cemetery and three new veterans’ homes. He also addressed veterans’ homelessness, the State Soldiers Assistance Program, the 911 Service Bonus, and planned events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam war. An issue of concern also discussed is veterans’ suicide and suicide prevention efforts. And a reminder if you, or another veteran you know is struggling with mental health issues, the Veterans Crisis Line can help in times of need. Veterans can use this option by dialing 988 and pressing 1 to contact the Veterans Crisis Line. Veterans may still reach the Veterans Crisis Line with the previous phone number—1-800-273-8255 and Press 1—by text (838255), and through chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat. Another bill considered in committee this week would institute new reporting requirements for grants given by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Accountability Act would formalize a reporting process for much of the data the department currently collects. You can read more about the bill here. The legislation was laid over for possible inclusion in a future bill. EMS Day at the CapitolLast week, emergency medical service (EMS) specialists attended their day at the Capitol to advocate for more funding in every corner of the state. I was happy to have a conversation with some local EMS workers and thanked them for their lifesaving work. Considering the tragic Burnsville events, we are even more cognizant of the important role they play in our communities. Governor Signs First Bill of the SessionLast week, the House passed, and Governor Walz signed, our first bill of 2024, with a nearly unanimous vote of 128-2. The bill is a technical corrections tax bill to help ensure as many Minnesotans as possible fully experience the benefits of the 2023 Tax bill.
