ST. PAUL, MN – On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, twenty-one Republican members of the Minnesota House of Representatives sent a letter to the Minnesota Congressional Delegation, encouraging them to keep the Adoption Tax Credit as part of federal tax reform. The tax credit, which provides families with a one-time credit of up to $13,570, is not part of the current Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
“As supporters of life, of children and of families, we believe the Adoption Tax Credit is an important federal policy that should not be nixed as part of comprehensive tax reform,” said Rep. Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, who chief authored the letter. “There are so many children in need of a home and so many parents looking to adopt a child. With adoption costing tens of thousands of dollars for many families, this tax credit can be the financial difference. We don’t want adoption to be out-of-reach for families.”
The Adoption Tax Credit currently costs about $300 million annually, less than .01 percent of the federal budget.
“We want people to choose life, we want to help children get out of our foster care system and into a permanent home, and we want to ensure more kids are adopted into stable and loving families. The Adoption Tax Credit is an important policy that helps make that happen,” concluded Rep. Franson.
