Rep. Franson's Statement on Growing Budget Deficit

Saint Paul, MN - Rep. Mary Franson (R-Alexandria) released the following statement after the February budget forecast projected a decrease in the surplus for FY 2026-2027 and an increase in the deficit for FY 2028-2029. The forecast also indicates that state spending growth is expected to outpace state revenue growth through fiscal year 2029, which contributes to the ongoing deficit.

"Last session, we saw Democrats waste an $18 billion surplus, increase taxes by $10 billion, and grow government spending by over 40%. Their reckless mismanagement and lack of fiscal responsibility put us in this position today," said Rep. Franson. "In order to solve this problem we need to take a serious look at our spending habits and make drastic changes to our budget, not continue to raise taxes and place the burden on Minnesotans."
