Capitol Update from Rep. Deb Kiel

Thursday, March 24, 2016

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Happy Easter to you and your family! I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend and get to spend some quality time with your loved ones, enjoying the spring weather. Whether you're traveling or staying in town, I hope you have a safe, fun and joyous Easter.

Here is an update about what is happening in Saint Paul before legislators head home for the holiday weekend.

Veterans Legislation

Earlier this week, a bill I am advancing for Minnesota National Guard members was heard in the House Veterans Division.

I am authoring the bill on behalf of Minnesota National Guard members who live across the border in North Dakota and are unable to receive a Minnesota fish and game license at an in-state rate. If you are bravely serving in uniform on behalf of our state, I am happy to ensure that nonresident members of the Minnesota National Guard can pay a Minnesota-rate to hunt and fish.

East Grand Forks Sales Tax

In the House Property Tax Committee, my legislation to allow the city of East Grand Forks to collect the voter-approved one percent sales and use tax to cover renovations of the city swimming pool was heard. Although the tax was approved by local residents, it still must receive legislative approval to become active.

East Grand Forks voters have spoken on this issue, and I am hopeful my bill can move through the legislative process so that the city can begin collecting the money.

Question of the Week

Question: Over the last decade, Minnesota has lost over 3,000 in-home child care providers. In addition, our state has some of the highest child care costs in the nation. Earlier this week, House Republicans introduced a bipartisan legislation package designed to address and help halt the child care shortage in Minnesota, encourage child care business development and look for long-term solutions for parents and providers.

Have you or someone you know had issues accessing affordable child care in Northwestern Minnesota?

Please reply to this email to share your thoughts with me! Your opinion is valuable and helps guide me in supporting legislation that reflects the priorities of our community.
