ST. PAUL – Following the announcement that indoor capacity limits would be removed beginning May 28, Representatives John Burkel, R-Badger, and Deb Kiel, R-Crookston, sent a letter to the governor urging him to allow graduation ceremonies happening in the week before May 28 to remove limits as well. The governor's administration refused, insisting that that date remain firm. Reps. Burkel and Kiel released the following statement on the refusal.
"Five days should not make the difference between a full graduation ceremony and a shell of one. It has been a year of challenges for these students, and they do not need this final setback as they celebrate the end of their high school career. It is time to let students and their families take personal responsibility and make these decisions for themselves. We are disappointed that the Governor is holding earlier graduation ceremonies, often in rural districts, to a different standard than those graduating less than a week later."
