Kiel reacts to budget target agreement
ST. PAUL, MN — Representative Deb Kiel, R-Crookston, issued the following statement regarding the budget agreement announced yesterday by Gov. Tim Walz, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, and House Speaker Melissa Hortman.
"This deal ties the hands of every legislator in the House and Senate and hands what is essentially a line-item veto to the Governor, the Senate Majority Leader, and the House Speaker," said Kiel. "It doesn't even address the Governor's emergency powers, which he has extended for the 15th month in a row, and gives him half a billion dollars to spend in federal COVID relief funds to spend even after news broke showing how wastefully the last round of federal funding was spent. This is not a good deal for Minnesotans and I hope all parties are open to improving this deal before it gets to the House and Senate floors."
