Kiel Advocates for Alzheimer’s Research at Capitol

Friday, January 23, 2015

ST. PAUL—Deb Kiel (R-Crookston) introduced the Alzheimer’s Research and Support Act on Thursday, January 22nd. House File 278, which has bipartisan support in the legislature, funds competitive grants for FY 2016-17 to research prevention, treatment and cures for Alzheimer’s. Dementia grants funded in the bill will help empower caregivers through tools to cope and better care for their loved ones.

“As Baby Boomers age, Alzheimer’s research becomes even more vital to the health and well-being of Minnesotans,” said Rep. Kiel. “It is a devastating disease emotionally, physically and financially, and takes a toll on too many people. By funding this research, Minnesota can tap into a talented group of researchers that can help lead the way in curing this life-shattering disease.”

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1-9 Americans age 65 and older and 1-3 Americans age 85 and older, are affected by this disease. What’s more, 20 percent of the Medicare budget is spent on treating Alzheimer’s, the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.

“Investing now in finding a cure is not only sensible, but it could mean a breakthrough in research that helps families right here in Minnesota,” added Rep. Kiel.

On Wednesday, the Capitol saw advocates come to talk with legislators about Alzheimer’s, hosting a rally at the Minnesota History Center. They also testified in support of Rep. Kiel’s research bill before the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee.

Senator Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) is carrying the companion bill in the Minnesota Senate.
