Legislative Update

Friday, May 5, 2017

Greetings,

This week, joint Minnesota House and Senate conference committees finished their work on major budget bills and their compromise proposals await final passage in both bodies before. Once that occurs, they will be sent to Governor Dayton for his signature.

At this time, we are waiting for Governor Dayton to engage and work to establish three way budget targets so we can finish our work and ultimately send him conference committee reports that we know he will sign into law.

We made great efforts to ensure that our legislative budget work was completed early so we could have plenty of time to negotiate with the governor. With two weeks left in session we remain well-ahead of schedule. Next weekend the governor’s fishing opener will take place in the St. Cloud area along the Mississippi River, an event we’ve all been eagerly anticipating. Will the bulk of our budget work be finished before the opener? Stay tuned for further budget updates.

National Night Out bill approved

This week the Minnesota House passed a bill that will assist local communities as they try to promote goodwill within their communities.

The legislation would make it legal for cities, counties and school districts to raise and spend money for events, such as National Night Out, to “foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the community,” unless another local law prohibits the activity.

Finally, have you received a suspicious phone call or email lately and wondered what you can do about it? The Minnesota Department of Revenue has some tips and contact information available for those who have been targeted with fraudulent activity. Click here for more information.
