Rep. O'Driscoll Legislative Update

Friday, February 21, 2020

Greetings,

Its Week 2 of the 2020 Legislative Session, and we are up and running at cruising altitude, as legislation is moving quickly in the Minnesota House.

SAFETY CONCERNS SHARED WITH LEGISLATORS ON PASSENGER RAIL

This week, House Republicans unveiled proposals to address the growing safety concerns on the light rail system in the Metro Area. Our transportation committee has heard testimony from operators who fear for their safety, and officers and passengers who have witnessed the criminal problems first-hand. With light rail expanding, keeping the public safe has become more of a concern and we need to find ways to address the rising criminal activity immediately.

ST. CLOUD AREA CHAMBER DAY AT THE CAPITOL

On Wednesday, I was pleased to meet with members of the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce during its “Day at the Capitol.” It’s always good to see people from central Minnesota, and I always appreciate hearing their thoughts on the barriers that impact economic growth in our region.

LOCAL VISITORS

This week I had a number of visitors from professions in the health care industry. Many of them are seeking to modernize state statutes so the can better provide medical services across Minnesota. The visitors included:

Physical therapy students McKenzie Dockendorf and Kellen Cameron

The Minnesota Academy of Physicians Assistants, including Sartell residents Darin Debronsky and Thomas Bevan, and St. Joseph resident Jenifer Detert.

Wednesday was designated MAAP STARS Legislative Day at the Capitol. MAAP is the Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs, and STARS is the student division of the parent organization. I enjoyed meeting with these students and sharing information with them about the legislative process.

Area optometrists Dr. Stacy Hinkemeyer, Dr. Trevor Fosso, and Dr. Nick Colatrella also stopped by my office this week.

Representatives Lisa Demuth and Tama Theis joined me in welcoming local firefighter Dave Yurczyk to St. Paul.

I also had a nice visit with Jodi Gertken who volunteers with the American Cancer Society.

College of Pharmacy students Rebecca Pickler and Mathew Winens also shared their experiences.
