Greetings,
Following a quiet weekend, the Minnesota House adjourned for the year on Monday. Early in the day, the Speaker of the House, the Senate Majority Leader, and the Governor reached agreement on a budget target.
I expect the overall budget will be agreed upon in the coming weeks, as a new budget must be in place by July 1 – the start of the next fiscal year.
As you may recall, I am also serving on the conference committee dealing with commerce issues. With this global agreement I expect we will now continue in working groups in order to get any outstanding issues resolved.
A special session is expected to be called on June 14 in order to finish the budget setting process.
NATIONAL GUARD MONUMENT DEDICATION
This weekend, Senator Howe, Representative Demuth and I had the honor of attending a National Guard memorial dedication ceremony honoring the three guardsmen who were killed after their helicopter crashed just south of St. Cloud more than a year and a half ago.
You’ll recall that James Rogers Jr., Charles Nord, and Kort Plantenberg paid the ultimate price on December 5, 2019. To commemorate these heroes, a memorial has been created at the crash site, and a bench recognizing each of these fallen soldiers has been placed there.
The three of us were invited to a gathering near the crash site that included members of their National Guard unit. It was such a privilege to be there with the troops and their leadership, to hear their stories about their fallen comrades, and to visit with them.
