Greetings,
The bulk of legislative activity taking place these days is happening in our House committees. From policy changes to surplus uses, legislators are debating ideas that could soon make their way to the House floor for a full debate.
TOP PRIORITY: TAX RELIEF
We’re going to see an updated state economic projection in the coming weeks. I have heard nothing that suggests the current $7.746 billion surplus number is going to dramatically change. This revenue has to be returned to state taxpayers in some fashion. I’m continuing to hear positive response to my plan that would repeal the income tax on Social Security and will continue to push for this change moving forward.
BEER SALES AT TOWN BASEBALL GAMES
In the past, if you wanted to enjoy a cold one at a town baseball game during the summer, the only option available at the concession stand was 3.2% beer. Many manufacturers of 3.2% beer have now stopped producing it, making it limited in supply.
This week in the House Commerce Committee, legislation was heard that would allow municipalities to issue wine and strong beer licenses to town ball teams. This is important as concession profits are often utilized by the team for things like uniforms and equipment. Because the Minnesota House is updating liquor laws in the State of Minnesota, this is one of the proposals under consideration.
LEGISLATIVE REDISTRICTING PLAN UNVEILED
This week, we learned the maps of new legislative districts in the state legislature. A special panel of five state judges released its redistricting plan for the Minnesota Legislature this week. As a member of the Minnesota House Redistricting Committee, I have been working hard on this issue over the past several months.
Population changes from the 2020 census makes new redistricting maps necessary. The House District I represent, District 13B, will contain the same communities next year as it does today. The only exception is that the new District 13B will lose Avon Township. The new district boundaries will take effect in January.
