Greetings,
This week, the Minnesota House continued to bring forward and approve omnibus supplemental budget bills on the House floor. Also included in this week’s review is an update on social security tax relief as well as information for veterans and their families that could be beneficial.
MORE SPENDING BILLS MOVING FORWARD
Even though this a session where we’re supposed to focus on a capital investment proposal and clean up any outstanding policy issues, the House majority continues to push omnibus supplemental budget plans. These bills would spend most of Minnesota’s budget surplus.
It’s a difficult strategy to support when the State of Minnesota funded all agencies and their programs last session. Any supplemental budget plan that’s approved this session would create even more permanent spending obligations for this biennium and beyond. This is unsustainable.
SOCIAL SECURITY TAX RELIEF
While I do author a bill to eliminate state income taxes on social security income, it was not granted a hearing. However, another bill that reduces the amount of state taxes on social security did and a version of the bill was included in the Democrat Tax bill. You will recall the Senate tax bill removes all state income tax on social security income, so there appears to be some movement eliminating state income tax on social security for Minnesotans. I will be continuing my work on eliminating state income tax on social security.
