Greetings –
As we approach the constitutionally required end of the legislative session on May 18th, I wanted to take a moment to update you on budget negotiations and the status of my legislation.
Budget Negotiations Slow Down over Gas Tax
I am disappointed that negotiations over our budget bills have begun to stall due to the governor and Senate’s insistence that any final agreement includes a 6.5% gas tax. Raising the gas tax is costly to Minnesota families, and is unnecessary in light of the nearly $2 billion budget surplus and April tax receipts, which were $260 million above projection.
Additionally, constituents in our district have continued to reach out to me throughout the session to share their opposition to an increase in the gas tax. The gas tax is even unpopular among legislators on both sides of the aisle, who unanimously voted against a gas tax increase when it was brought before the House last week.
This issue has drastically slowed the work of the House and Senate conference committees as they work to reach a balanced and fair budget that will fund Minnesota’s priorities. I am frustrated at those who are putting partisan politics before the real needs of Minnesotans, and I am disappointed in those who continue to propose an increase in the gas tax on Minnesota’s hardworking families.
Bills Signed by Governor Dayton
Three of the 22 bills that Governor Dayton has signed thus far this session have been bills that I’ve chief authored. They primarily deal with energy savings and mortgage reforms, ensuring consumer protection and cost savings for all Minnesotans. I’m thankful that Governor Dayton has recognized the importance of these bills to Minnesota families.
As we continue with negotiations, please stay in touch to share your thoughts on the issues that impact you and your family. You can reach me via phone at (651) 296-3780, or via email at rep.tim.odriscoll@house.mn. Stay tuned for more updates as news continues to break.
Sincerely,
Rep. Tim O’Driscoll
This Week in Minnesota History: Minnesota’s statehood was declared on May 11th, 1858. I am thankful for the opportunity to take the time one day a year to look back with gratitude on the wonderful opportunities available to us in Minnesota.
