House passes Swedzinski bill to allow more flexibility with veterans memorials

Monday, February 13, 2017

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota House of Representatives on Monday overwhelmingly approved a bill Rep. Chris Swedzinski, R-Ghent, authored to provide more local flexibility in appropriating money for veterans memorials.

Swedzinski’s bill (H.F. 375) would undo current state law which prohibits county officials from funding memorials to veterans outside of their respective county seats, allowing them to support memorials throughout their jurisdiction.

“The current restriction is unnecessary and my proposal would allow for more local discretion,” Swedzinski said. “It’s a real common-sense bill and I am really pleased with the bipartisan support it received in passing through the House. I look forward to it being signed into law.”

Swedzinski’s bill passed the House 125-0 and now is in the hands of the Senate, which also must provide approval before it can be presented to the governor for his action.
