Swedzinski: Democrats won’t budge from $12 billion in tax increases

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

ST. PAUL – With less than two weeks remaining in the 2019 legislative session, state budget negotiations had not gained traction as of Tuesday afternoon.

State Rep. Chris Swedzinski, R-Ghent, said an unwillingness on the part of House Democrats and Gov. Tim Walz to move on their proposals to raise taxes by more than $12 billion over the next four years is central to the holdup.

“We’ve got a few days behind us in negotiations and Democrats and the governor have not come down one cent on their proposed tax increases,” Swedzinski said. “Let’s remind folks out in Greater Minnesota that we have a surplus of over $1 billion, but Democrats are still seeking to raise taxes by over $12 billion. I recommend folks reach out to our new governor and let him know we already pay way too much in taxes and that we need to start cutting taxes, not raising them.”
