ST. PAUL – State Rep. Chris Swedzinski, R-Ghent, called for the Minnesota State High School League to reconsider its prohibition on spectators for events in public schools this fall and the league responded favorably Thursday.
The MSHSL announced two spectators per participant now will be allowed to attend events in public school facilities. Participants include athletes, performers, competitors, student workers and coaches/advisors. Social distancing guidelines – including a 6-foot separation among spectators – apply.
Swedzinski is among House Republicans who publicly urged the MSHSL to revisit its attendance guidelines. He said they were arbitrary and inconsistent with state policies regarding indoor gatherings amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
“I’m extremely happy that the Minnesota State High School League has made this change,” Swedzinski said.“I think the opportunities, especially for seniors, to invite friends and family to come and see them in their final year, will be memories that will last a lifetime. I just wish everyone best of luck this fall in their sports and I’m glad parents will finally be able to join them for indoor activities.”
