New Tax Cuts Benefit Over One Million Middle Class Minnesotans

Friday, March 28, 2014

To the editor of the White Bear Press:

Minnesota’s economy is getting stronger and will continue to do so thanks to new middle class tax cuts approved by the DFL-led Legislature and Governor Dayton.

Over one million Minnesotans will pay less in taxes as a result of this legislation, including married couples, working families, new homeowners, teachers, students and more. In addition, the bill repeals three business-to-business sales taxes, such as a tax on warehousing services that was scheduled to take effect on April 1.

Thanks to a $1.2 billion surplus, we were able to cut taxes and maintain a structurally balanced budget, helping to keep our state’s finances on solid footing right now and into the future.

If you have not yet filed your 2013 Minnesota tax return, the Department of Revenue encourages you to wait until April 3 to file to provide time to update their system.

If you already filed, you don’t need to do anything right now. The Department of Revenue will continue mailing refunds as usual. After the April 15 filing deadline, they will review tax returns received before tax refund changes took effect then send any refund increase the same way you elected to receive your refund.

If you qualify for a bigger refund, the Department of Revenue will be able to make the necessary changes to your return using the tax documents you provided. If they are unable to do so, they will individually contact you by postal mail to request documents needed to amend your return.

For more information, visit the Department of Revenue’s website at www.revenue.state.mn.us and click the orange button labeled “Tax Law Changes” for helpful resources. Feel free to contact me by phone at (651) 296-5363 or by email at rep.peter.fischer@house.mn with any questions as well.

If you want to learn more about 2014 Session, I encourage you to attend my upcoming town hall meeting with Senator Chuck Wiger. It’s taking place on Saturday, April 5 from 10:00-11:30am at Century College (East Campus) Room 1333. We will also provide an update about our ongoing efforts to address water shortages in our region.

Sincerely,

Peter Fischer
