ST. PAUL — Last Monday, House File 3118, authored by Representative Mike Freiberg (DFL-Golden Valley), was approved by the Veterans Affairs Division. The bill provides a tax reimbursement for disabled veterans who have been paying higher property taxes after they move in the middle of the year, because the tax benefit isn't transferred to the new home until the following year.
“Veterans who are disabled and their families have sacrificed too much to be caught up in red tape,” said Rep. Freiberg. “As a state we have already decided to provide these veterans and their families with this tax benefit. This bill simply provides a rebate for the amount that a disabled veteran and their family should have received in the new home.”
The issue was discovered when a New Hope resident, who is a disabled veteran, moved and was no longer able to claim the property tax exemption for that year. Because property tax credits are applied to a property, not the people living there, the new homeowner received the benefit for the remainder of that year instead of the disabled veteran who qualified for the reduced tax.
Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota have expressed their support for the bill. DAV MN is a membership organization of Minnesotans with disabilities received while serving in the military.
HF 3118 passed on a voice vote and was referred to the House Committee on Taxes.
