Legislative Update

Friday, May 12, 2017

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol.

Tax Relief, Transportation and Budget Bills

This week the Legislature began advancing budget bills after coming to agreements in conference committees. Legislation passed includes more than $1 billion in middle-class tax relief for families, farmers, small business owners, college graduates and seniors across the state. We also passed an education bill that invests $1.14 billion more for our students and schools over the current biennium, putting more money into every classroom, as well as a long-term transportation plan that focuses on our roads and bridges without a harmful gas tax increase.

We are sending these bills to Governor Dayton’s desk for signature because we believe that these bills will improve the lives Minnesota citizens, families and taxpayers. We also are committed to getting our work done on time, and are hopeful he will act favorably on them. If he does not, my hope is he gets serious about meaningfully negotiating with the House and Senate to come to a commonsense compromise, including helping us set global budget targets instead of small piecemeal offers on individual bills.

House and Senate Republicans are advancing a budget proposal that limits government growth, invests in our shared priorities and provides significant tax relief to the hardworking taxpayers who helped fund our state’s surplus.

With a little over a week to go before adjournment, I will keep you updated on negotiations.

Happy Mother’s Day!

I wanted to take a moment to wish all of the wonderful mothers, grandmothers and women who positively influence our lives a Happy Mother’s Day! I hope all the moms out there enjoy a wonderful day with their loved ones.
