Legislative Update

Friday, May 31, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

Last week, we had a special session that lasted from 10am Friday to 7am Saturday morning to finish passing the state budget. The process was rocky, with little transparency for both the public and most legislators. Most bills were put together by a “tribunal” of Governor Walz, Speaker Hortman, and Senate Majority Leader Gazelka.

Most of the controversial policy provisions, like gun control, a $0.20 per gallon gas tax, and a $68 million cut to nursing homes, were dropped from the final bills. We were able to accomplish some good things, such as extending the reinsurance program to keep health insurance premiums under control, keeping the Auto Parts Sales Tax dedicated to fixing up roads and bridges, and funding youth firearm safety training, as well as increasing funding for schools and special education and providing additional funding for safe schools. Unfortunately, the final tax bill included the Sick Tax, which will raise the cost of medical procedures, doctor visits, and hospital stays.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance to you or your family on a matter of state government. I can be reached by phone at 651-296-4346 or by email at rep.brian.johnson@house.mn.

Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Brian
