St. Paul, MN – HF 36699, the Omnibus Tax Bill was heard on the House Floor on Wednesday. In the package, few permanent tax cuts were provided.
“We have a $7 billion budget surplus in Minnesota,” Representative Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, said. “This bill does not help families, individuals, or businesses or lessen our property taxes. The only people it benefits are undocumented workers.”
In Minnesota, the House Democrats' proposed budget plans would spend $21 for every $1 in tax cuts. This comes as Minnesotans struggle with inflation, higher gas prices and food shortages in the Biden/Walz economy.
Property taxes are on the rise across the state. The Chair of the Tax Committee hailed the bill as the “largest tax cut in 20 years,” however, the bill does not include any permanent tax reductions but does include an increase in permanent spending. The bill would shift $18.7 million in rising property tax burdens back onto middle-class families.
Kresha, who voted "no" on the bill, said this was not money well spent.
“The Democrats are not thinking of the taxpayer. They are not thinking of the many struggles folks are facing in this economy. Higher taxes are not the answer. We need permanent and meaningful relief, and we won’t get it with this bill,” Kresha said.
