News from Representative Kresha 06-27-2013

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Dear Friends,

I hope your summer is going well. I just wanted to update you on some recent events going on in our community. It's been great to be back in the district, hearing what people think about this past legislative session. As always, if you have thoughts or questions, I would love to hear from you.

Crosslake Chili Cook-Off
Last week the Brainerd Lakes Chamber sponsored a bipartisan legislative forum for District 9 and 10 legislators to reflect on the 2013 session and participate in a fun chili cook-off.

We poked some fun at the Minnesota Department of Health, which objected to the fact that the chili was prepared at contestant homes. I give credit to my friend DFL Rep. Joe Radinovich, who had sponsored legislation earlier this year that would have eased
some of the ridiculous, albeit well-intentioned regulations in place that would have exempted chili cookoffs like this from the long arm of the government.

You can read a great article about the event from the Brainerd Dispatch here.

Camp Ripley
Earlier this week, I visited spent the day with Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets training at Camp Ripley here in Morrison County. The cadets were in the middle of a one week encampment training program offered by the CAP each year. This is a week of communication, respect, and leadership for the cadets.

Cadets are able to join the CAP at age 12. I participated in a simulated tank training, virtual battleground simulation and communication, and leadership meetings. It was quite the experience!

I was very impressed with the dedication, passion, and leadership these young men and women displayed.  It was professionalism at its finest, and I can see the results.  The youth who participate will be better leaders and followers and are developing life skills.  Witnessing this encampment has deepened my support and commitment to the Civil Air Patrol.  Furthermore, I am very proud that Camp Ripley, in my district, provides the resources for groups like this to train future leaders.

Chicano Latino Council Meeting
Also this week, the Chicano Latino Affairs Council hosted a community forum to discuss issues of importance to the Hispanic community in Long Prairie. We had about 15 people in attendance, including Police Chief Kevin Langer and Chief Deputy Jon Sargo from the Todd County Sheriff's Department.

I was impressed by the turnout of community members, and it was extremely helpful to hear their concerns and successes. Many people don't realize that Long Prairie has one of the state's most successful garden coops that is run by the Hispanic Community. It's a tremendous resource and asset to the city, and a driving economy force for our area.

Swanville Carnival This Weekend
This weekend is the Granddaddy of small town events: The Swanville Carnival. The event runs Friday-Sunday and is great for the whole family. Hope to see you there!

Have a great 4th of July!

Ron Kresha
