News from Representative Petersburg 03-21-2014

Friday, March 21, 2014

Dear Friends,

Today the House voted by a wide bipartisan margin to repeal some of the tax increases passed in 2013 by the majority.

I voted against these tax increases last session, and was pleased to have the legislature fix these mistakes, which had been the target of bipartisan criticism since they were passed last year.

The repealed tax provisions included the gift tax and three business-to-business taxes; the telecommunications tax, the warehousing tax, and the commercial machinery equipment repair tax.

Unfortunately, the tax repeal passed today is not retroactive meaning the state will keep the $55 million already collected from the telecommunications tax and equipment repair tax, which began July 1, 2013.

The bill also conformed much of Minnesota's tax code to the federal code, restoring important tax breaks for Minnesota filers. Other minor tax modifications were also included.

If you have not yet filed your tax return, the Department of Revenue is asking that taxpayers wait until Monday to file. If you have already filed your taxes, the Revenue Department will automatically review your return to ensure you receive the deductions you are eligible for.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact my office by calling 651-296-5368 or emailing rep.john.petersburg@house.mn.

I will do my best to assist you, or ensure that someone from the Department of Revenue can answer any questions you have about the impact of today's tax bill.

Have a great weekend,

John Petersburg
State Representative, District 24A
